Technical Note
NIK Drug Test Kits
Crime laboratories are so busy that drug tests take too long. With the cooperation of the Prosecuting Attorney, many police agencies have turned to presumptive drug testing. If the results indicate that an illegal substance is present, criminal charges may be filed.
How to use a NIK® drug test kit
The NIK® Pouches contain one, two or three chemical ampoules in a heavy-duty plastic pouch. This eliminates the need for measuring, mixing and dispensing of reagents. Just place a small sample of the suspected drug in the pouch, break the ampoules and watch for the color change. A positive color indicator on the pouch will help to interpret the reaction.
Testing an Unknown or Suspect Material
Each specifically-designed NIK® Pouch contains the chemicals required to perform the presumptive test in pre-filled, hermetically sealed glass ampoules. These ampoules are held together by a plastic bar in heavy-duty plastic pouches in which the actual chemical reaction is done. This bar holds the ampoules in the proper order for performing the color test.
The sample size of the suspected drug should be the amount of powder held on the large end of a flat toothpick. The NIK® Pouches come with a Loading Device designed to measure the exact amount needed for the testing procedure.
Just place this small sample of the suspected drug in the pouch, break the ampoules in the order indicated by the instructions, agitate, wait and watch for the color change(s). Once the ampoule is broken, do not continue to "mash" the pouch. This could cause a tear in the pouch from the broken glass.
A positive color indicator is printed on the pouch. To see the color properly, hold the pouch steady in front of a white piece of paper.
For any test, there are four important factors to look for:
- Color
- Change or absence of color
- Intensity of the color
- Location of the colors in the test pack
| 1.
Open the pouch by sliding off the clip
|
2.
Insert the sample with the Loading Device
|
| 3.
Break the ampoules and agitate the pouch
|
4.
Hold the pouch steady and observe the color changes

Introduction
|
The goal of latent print examiners and technicians is to discover and
collect latent prints by various means. The ultimate goal is
to identify those latent prints to the person responsible
for the criminal act and prosecute them to the fullest
extent of the law. Some of these means to develop latent
prints include processing evidence and other surfaces using
powders, chemicals and lighting techniques. The purpose of
this booklet is to provide a resource of information about
latent print processing techniques. This booklet does not
contain every process available and does not claim to be all
inclusive of all variations of processes. The information
has been collected from various sources.

Caution
|
This booklet
contains descriptions of processes utilizing chemicals or
combinations of chemicals which may be hazardous to the
user's health. It is strongly recommended that proper
precautions be taken when using hazardous chemicals or
combinations thereof. Safety equipment needed may include
fume hoods, gloves, protective clothing, safety goggles,
splash shields or respirators. It may be necessary to store
these chemicals in specific containers or cabinets. It is
the user's responsibility to know and use the proper and
adequate safety equipment required the various chemicals
listed.
